I did some research and bought it directly from the Texas designer manufacturer a few years ago before all the Japan meltdown crisis This is a Dose meter to alert for dangerous doses of radiation. It is not a toy, it will not detect low levels of radiation that are not "acutely" dangerous. If you don't know the difference between a Dosimeter and a Ratemeter don't buy ANYBODYS "radiation detector" until you do, as you might just waste your money. While it does start alerting at a low level, it is not really to be used as a Ratemeter to detect the currently low levels of radiation from Japan or check on the radioactivity of Vaseline Glass or Fiesta Ware plates. If this sounds it's alert, it means there is a serious issue brewing! The reason I bought mine is for protection (notification) against dangerous levels of radiation from Radiological Dispersal Devices (Dirty Bombs) and a gross indication of Nuke Weapon radioactive... It's not a toy or a gimmick. Neither is it intended to detect low-level radiation--if it alarms, you most likely have a serious problem. If you need one of these, it should serve you well.
